CELEBRATING ELECTRONICS: MUSIC BY JOHN BISCHOFF
FEATURING JAMES FEI AND TIM PERKIS

Saturday, April 24, 2021
7:00 PM PDT
Mills College Performing Arts Online Event

Mills Music Now
Presented by Mills College Music Department and Center for Contemporary Music

This online event is free and open to the public. Registration is required:
https://performingarts.mills.edu/2021/04/bischoff-fei-perkis.php

Composer John Bischoff will present two solos that use the imperfect tones and sub-audio clicks of analog circuits to drive an array of digital synthesis elements. He will also be joined by electronics wizards, James Fei and Tim Perkis, in a new trio configuration. Inspired by the legendary League of Automatic Music Composers—Bischoff and Perkis were original members of the group—the trio spins parallel threads of electronic sound triggered by individual action, machine interjection, and event patterning culled from the instantaneous data flowing between their systems.

THE MUSIC OF MARK TRAYLE

The superbly imaginative, sonically expansive work of composer and sound artist Mark Trayle (1955 - 2015) is the subject of this tribute by friends, colleagues and former students in The Hub and Bitpanic. Co-founded by Trayle in 1986, The Hub emerged out of the Mills College scene to become the most influential improvising electronic ensemble since Musica Elettronica Viva (MEV). Known for using networked electronic and digital systems of its own devising, the Bay Area group currently consists of John Bischoff, Chris Brown, Tim Perkis, Scot Gresham-Lancaster, Phil Stone and Matt Ingalls. Adding to the computer music lineage pioneered by The Hub is the recently formed collective Bitpanic. Based in Los Angeles, it comprises Casey Anderson, Scott Cazan, Clay Chaplin, David Paha and Stephanie Smith - all one-time students of Trayle at CalArts.
